Snowdon offers two summer intern positions and occasional winter caretaker positions. These are typically opportunities for college students studying some aspect related to animals and wildlife, including wildlife majors, veterinarians, biologists, etc. Many colleges have allowed the experience to be included as a credited course.

Please note: In order to ensure rehabilitating wildlife stay as wild as possible, human exposure is limited and visitors are not allowed in the sanctuary area. The exception is during the annual open house held each Fall.

Snowdon received what may possibly be one of the c

Snowdon received what may possibly be one of the cutest patients yesterday! This little Northern Pygmy-owl was brought in by one of our board members after it struck a window. Fortunately, his prognosis is promising and he is now 25¢ richer than he was before he came in. He’ll get a few days of fluids, pain meds, and supportive care before we test his flight. If his flight quality passes, he will be released! ❤️

While these guys may be tiny, they are the mightiest of hunters. They mostly prey on songbirds, but will eat insects, reptiles, amphibians and small mammals. In fact, they will hunt prey that is twice their weight! Wow! Since they wouldn’t be able to eat all of that at once, they usually cache their food in cavities where they nest. What’s also interesting about these guys, is that they have false eyes on the back of their heads. It is speculated that they serve purpose to protect the owl from birds mobbing them from behind. How interesting! 🦉

Did you know that this week is international bat w

Did you know that this week is international bat week? It goes from October 24-31st. This week is dedicated to sharing appreciation and education on why bats are so important to the environment! 🦇

These guys help eat many insects that might otherwise destroy crops. Fruit bats also help pollinate plants! Unfortunately, their numbers are declining due to pesticides and white-nose syndrome which is a fungal disease that affects their muzzles. Often times, it happens while a bat is in hibernation and this causes the bat to wake up frequently, leading to starvation, and eventually death.

This little guy pictured here is a big brown bat that Snowdon received back in September. He was found in a well-lit parking lot where he most likely was confused and probably thought it was daylight constantly. Because of this, he didn’t move for about 3 days and a kind rescuer brought him in. After rehydrating him and a few days of supportive care, he was soon released. 🖤🦇

*Disclaimer: Never touch a bat with your bare hands. They are the only rabies vector species in Idaho. If you find a bat that has been in one area for over 24 hours, call your nearest wildlife rehabber immediately. Use thick leather gloves or a thick towel/blanket if a person or bat is in immediate danger and must be moved.*

Oh no! We’re a day late for International Raccoon Appreciation Day! These are the 3 raccoons we had this spring and summer. Due to their intelligence and dexterity, these guys are able to adapt to their environment very well. They also get extra appreciation for being absolutely adorable. ❤️🦝

By the way, if anyone has any dry dog food they wouldn’t mind donating, we will gladly take it! We aren’t picky and we can even take expired and opened bags. As you can see, we are barely able to keep up with their demand. They are still growing lots and now have to fatten up for their first hibernation this upcoming winter. ❤️🌲

Have you ever wanted to get an inside peek of our facility? You can if you come to our annual open house on Saturday, September 14th from 1-4pm at our physical address: 1981 Lick Creek Rd, McCall. We are located to the right of the road right after the signs say winter maintenance and pavement ends (pavement is no longer there, though). Look for our sign, too!
Tours will be led in groups and you will get an opportunity to meet our ambassador birds! We will have baked goods available, merch, and even a rubber ducky race at 3:30 pm! It’ll be a good time. We really hope to see you there! 🦊🐦‍⬛🦉🐿️🐻🪶🐾
