Snowdon offers two summer intern positions and occasional winter caretaker positions. These are typically opportunities for college students studying some aspect related to animals and wildlife, including wildlife majors, veterinarians, biologists, etc. Many colleges have allowed the experience to be included as a credited course.

Please note: In order to ensure rehabilitating wildlife stay as wild as possible, human exposure is limited and visitors are not allowed in the sanctuary area. The exception is during the annual open house held each Fall.

Thank you so much, Donnelly Elementary, for letting us come and present with Qa’Ya, yesterday! We had a blast and we hope the kindergartners did, too. They got to learn all about hawks and owls and why they’re helpful to the environment. They sure help to keep those rodent/reptile populations down and balanced!

As the weather in McCall is warming up, our bear cub patients have been out of their dens exploring our two acre enclosure a lot more! Our spring intern found these adorable photos on one of our game cameras.

This is also a friendly reminder, now that bears are out of their dens, to be mindful of any food attractants on your property. This will not only ensure the safety of you and your family, but the safety of the bears as well. Here are a few tips to help minimize conflicts:

-Hang bird feeders really high off the ground and clean spillage that falls on ground (or avoid putting bird feeders out all together)
-Avoid leaving food out for outdoor pets/wildlife or supervise them while eating and immediately take dishes inside when done
-Keep pets indoors or supervise them at all times when they’re outside
-Burn BBQs clean when you’re done using them and make sure they’re securely stored away without propane tanks to avoid fire hazards
-If you have livestock, take small animals in at night and think about investing in an electric fence or use guardian animals for protection
-Never store food outside or leave anything odorous in car
-Make sure trash is never left outside and dispose of it in bear resistant trash cans
-Leave talk radio on when you’re not home to keep bears away
-Make sure all doors are latched/locked as well as accessible windows to avoid unwanted entry
-If you find a bear that’s injured or has poor body condition, NEVER feed or talk to them and call fish and game as soon as possible to inform them of the situation
-Invest in some bear repellant spray for possible sticky situations and use at a distance
-For black bears, always make yourself look bigger, stand your ground and make a lot of noise (make sure there is a clear way for the bear to escape)
-For grizzly bears, stand your ground, don’t make a lot of noise but quietly talk to it, don’t look at it in the eyes, and back away slowly going sideways but don’t turn your back to it

We hope these are helpful tips for you. Bears are a widely misunderstood animal, but if you keep a respectful distance and follow these tips, conflicts should be minimal.

Snowdon got a few calls concerning a bald eagle ne

Snowdon got a few calls concerning a bald eagle near the Valley County transfer station, yesterday. The caring callers were concerned because they had seen him on the ground for a few days unable to fly. Two staff members were able to successfully rescue and capture this beautiful creature. During his intake exam, we found that he has a right wing injury with several primary feathers missing or broken. Although the prognosis is guarded, we do believe that this eagle has a chance to be successfully rehabilitated and will be transferred to WSU’s veterinary hospital for continued care.

Spring cleaning is upon us! Every year, we must clean up debris from winter’s worst. That means picking up branches, tree limbs and sometimes trees and moving rocks to divert water overflows. This year we are also replacing the manager’s cabin roof. It has served us well for 43 years, but has been leaking for the last 5. Patching was only a short term answer and now we must replace the entire roof. We have a wonderful roofer, but prices are much higher than expected. Happy Easter from Snowdon Wildlife Sanctuary! 🐣🐰

This little mountain cottontail came in to Snowdon as an orphan this last summer. As it gets warmer, keep an eye out for cottontail nests in the grass. They might even be in your backyard!

Most orphans come in due to a dog/cat injury or mom doesn’t come back because she got injured or killed. Cat bites are especially lethal because a bacteria in cats’ mouths can spread infection very quickly. In order to help prevent injuries, keep a laundry basket or a turned off mower over the nest during the day to ensure your pets and other potential predators won’t be able to disturb them. Always make sure there is enough room for mama to be able to get back into the nest, or move the mower/laundry basket at dawn and dusk to give her space. Cottontails are diurnal, which means you‘ll only see the mom come back to feed her babies at sunrise and sunset.

If you can’t tell if mom has come back, trail cameras are always a good noninvasive way to tell. You can always put a crisscross pattern of twigs gently over the nest, and if you check back later that day and it’s been disturbed or moved, then you’ll know she has been back to feed her babies. Always call your local rehabber before taking babies away from their nest. Never try and relocate a nest, either, because mom will not be able to find her babies.

Snowdon received this red-tailed hawk patient with

Snowdon received this red-tailed hawk patient with minor head trauma, trichomoniasis (protozoan parasite that affects nutrient absorption), and slight case of pododermititis (bumble foot). After given antibiotics, pain meds, anti-parasitics, and physical therapy, he was successfully released back into his territory close to where he was found by the rescuer. He was our first raptor patient to utilize our new flight barn! Scroll to see the video of him being released!

Qa’Ya, our educational red-tailed hawk is here to tell you that it is National Wildlife Day! This event falls on two days of the year. It was founded in 2005 by Colleen Paige who wanted to spread awareness of endangered species. While the original date was only September 4th, they added another date (February 22nd) in honor of Steve Irwin and all that he has done and to celebrate his birthday.

Qa’Ya has been enjoying some time outside and really enjoys walks around the property on the glove. He is ready to do all the presentations this year! 🪶

Here is an update on patient 23-97. This cub was found near Salmon and was presumed orphaned since it was not hibernating. This patient was admitted to our care in mid-December. We are happy to say this patient is putting on the pounds, looking much healthier, and is an expert tree climber! We currently have two cubs in our care that are overwintering and will be released late spring/early summer when they are a healthy weight and can sustain themselves in the wild. This cub is definitely the most adventurous of the two (photo and video were taken from a distance). It is very important to keep their fear of humans to prevent habituation that could cause human/wildlife conflicts later on. For these reasons, we ask people to never feed bears. 🐻

Hi, everyone! Allow me to introduce myself as the new wildlife rehabilitation manager at Snowdon Wildlife Sanctuary! My name is Genevieve Arterburn, and I graduated from the University of Idaho with a degree in Wildlife Resources and a minor in Rangeland Ecology and Management. I used to work at In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Educational Center in Texas and WildCare Oklahoma Foundation (which is another wildlife rehabilitation center). These two places helped me to get where I am today. Although, I’ve learned so much, I’m extremely eager to learn even more and build up my skill set. It has always been a dream of mine to work at Snowdon Wildlife Sanctuary and I am so excited to connect with the community and help as many animals as I can. We got a call from a concerned resident in McCall this morning about a coyote seen between the Post Office and Barbara Morgan Elementary School heading north into the woods. This coyote is thought to have been poisoned and was stumbling around looking very ill. If anyone has eyes on him and can give coordinates or approximate address, that would be amazing!
